The fateful journey of a Chinese family on a plane for the first time

A young couple on March 21 took their 18-month-old daughter on board MU5735 to Guangzhou for medical treatment, the first time the whole family flew on a plane.

Gu Hanyu, 26 years old, and her husband Guo Tangqiang, 28 years old, and their daughter Guo Yumat, 18 months old, were among 123 passengers on the fateful flight MU5735 from Kunming to Guangzhou on March 21.

In an article published in the China Youth Daily on March 23, Vuong Bach Duong said he was the younger brother of Gu Hanyu. Vuong, who did not want to reveal his true identity to ensure privacy, said it was the first time his sister’s whole family took a plane.

They want to go to Guangzhou to have surgery on their daughter’s parotid fistula. Coc Ham Vu’s family originally booked a flight that morning, but the flight was canceled, so they had to reschedule to a later flight.

Before China Eastern Airlines’ Boeing 787-800, MU5735, took off, Gu Hanyu sent a video to his brother, showing baby Yu Mo dancing around the boarding lounge. Another video shows the little girl laughing and crying and playing peek-a-boo with a mask.

The plane carrying the whole family left the runway at Changshui Kunming International Airport, Kunming City at 13:15 pm on March 21, and is expected to arrive in Guangzhou at 15:07. But about an hour later, the plane lost contact.

FlightRadar24 data shows that the plane plunged almost vertically at an altitude of nearly 9,000 meters. The pilot seemed to have tried to save the plane in the last seconds, regaining altitude, but the plane still crashed to the ground at a speed of nearly 600 km / h.

“The past few days, I thought this was just a dream. I always felt that when I woke up the next day, she would call me,” Vuong Bach Duong said.

He said that Coc Ham Vu was born deaf and mute. “I don’t know when the plane crashed, did it affect her hearing aids? Will my sister have a headache?”

Coc Ham Vu knew her husband through matchmaking. The two got married, held a simple wedding ceremony, only ordered a few trays of rice to invite family members. “My brother-in-law is an honest, quiet person who treats his wife and children very well,” Vuong said.

Vuong Bach Duong hopes to know more information about the cause of the accident. “When my father heard about the accident, he fainted on the spot, woke up a few minutes later. My family hasn’t slept for three days, we all want to know the cause as soon as possible,” he said.

Flight MU5735 crashed in the forest area of ‚Äč‚ÄčTeng district, Wuzhou city, Guangxi province on March 21 and broke into many small pieces. After days of searching, the rescue team found the black box containing the cockpit voice recording data, but did not find any survivors. Chinese officials have not confirmed the official death toll in the accident.
